History of The Wall Street Journal

By Alex Drew

The Wall Street Journal is an English-language international daily newspaper published by Dow Jones ... Company, a division of News Corporation, in New York City, with Asian and European editions. As of 2007, it has a worldwide daily circulation of more than 2 million, with approximately 931,000 paying online subscribers. It was the largest-circulation newspaper in the United States until November 2003, when it was surpassed by USA Today. It would later regain its number one position in the United States in October of 2009.Its main rival is the London-based Financial Times, which also publishes several international editions.

The Journal newspaper primarily covers U.S. and international business and financial news and issues-the paper's name comes from Wall Street, the street in New York City that is the heart of the financial district. It has been printed continuously since being founded on July 8, 1889, by Charles Dow, Edward Jones, and Charles Bergstresser. The newspaper has won the Pulitzer Prize thirty-three times, including 2007 prizes for its reporting on backdated stock options and the adverse effects of China's booming economy.

Dow Jones ... Company, publisher of the Journal, was founded in 1882 by reporters Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser. Jones converted the small Customers' Afternoon Letter into the Wall Street Journal, first published in 1889,[7] and began delivery of the Dow Jones News Service via telegraph. The Journal featured the Jones 'Average', the first of several indexes of stock and bond prices on the New York Stock Exchange.

Journalist Clarence Barron purchased control of the company for US$130,000 in 1902; circulation was then around 7,000 but climbed to 50,000 by the end of the 1920s. Barron and his predecessors were credited with creating an atmosphere of fearless, independent financial reporting-a novelty in the early days of business journalism.

Barron died in 1928, a year before Black Tuesday, the stock market crash that greatly effected the Great Depression in the United States. Barron's descendants, the Bancroft family, would continue to control the company until 2007. Later on, the Woodworths published the paper. Mrs. Teresa "Teddy" Woodworth was a prominent socialite of her day. The Woodworths resided at New York's Sherry-Netherland, sharing the penthouse floor with Cole Porter.

The Journal took its modern shape and prominence in the 1940s, a time of industrial expansion for the United States and its financial institutions in New York. Bernard Kilgore was named managing editor of the paper in 1941, and company CEO in 1945, eventually compiling a 25-year career as the head of the Journal. Kilgore was the architect of the paper's iconic front-page design, with its "What's News" digest, and its national distribution strategy, which brought the paper's circulation from 33,000 in 1941 to 1.1 million at the time of Kilgore's death in 1967. It was also on Kilgore's watch, in 1947, that the paper won its first Pulitzer Prize, for editorial writing. - 23210

Pivot Point And Fibonacci Trading (Part I)

By Ahmad Hassam

The use of Fibonacci retracement levels and pivot points are often considered by their adherents as complete, self contained trading strategies. Some traders are diehard fans of the Fibonacci and pivot point trading.

Don't confuse the two methods as one. I want to make it clear the Fibonacci Retracement and the Pivot Points are two different methods and must not be confused as a single trading method. Both produce mathematically derived support and resistance levels that traders may use either as indicators of possible retracement turns or as zones to watch for breakouts. The horizontal price levels that are generated through Fibonacci retracement levels and the pivot points are calculated using different methods and formulas.

One question that might bug your mind is that why these levels work in the market. What is the secret behind them? Why Fibonacci retracement levels and the pivot points work most of the time? What makes these tools work surprisingly well under diverse market conditions is the simple fact that many traders both small and large use Fibonacci retracement levels and pivot points in their trading.

This is why significant price action occurs around these levels due to the fact that many traders are watching and reacting to these price levels. Therefore the levels derived from these two tools become self fulfilling prophecy.

When the majority does the same thing, it starts effecting the market movement. This phenomenon contributes to the Fibonacci retracement levels and pivot points frequent effectiveness and accuracy in describing the market movement. The most common Fibonacci retracement levels are 23.6%, 38.2% and 61.8%. These three Fibonacci retracement levels are most frequently followed by the traders.

Fibonacci retracement levels are very popular among the traders. You will hear very often, the commentary on CNBC or Bloomberg that price is approaching the 38.2% retracement level and something important like a turn could occur at this level. This shows the popularity of Fibonacci retracement levels among the trading community.

Fibonacci retracements can be traded either as a breakout opportunity or as a retracement bounce. Both methods have clear cut locations for the stop loss placement similar to most support/resistance trading methods. Fibonacci levels can also be used as profit targets for existing open trades.

Pivot points are leading indictors of the price action in the market. Pivot points are derived mathematically from the previous day's data that includes the previous day's high. Low and close. The main pivot point (PP) is calculated by taking the average of the high, low and close of the previous days' price action.

From the PP, four other primary pivot points are calculated. Two are above the main PP and two are below the main PP. The levels above are R1 and R2 where R stands for resistance.

You can easily find a pivot point calculator online. Most of the charting software also can calculate the pivot points. The two levels below the main PP are the S1 and S2 where S stands for the Support. Often these pivot points are further extended to R3 and S3.

Pivot point trading can be a highly profitable trading method. Many trader use pivot points in their trading! However, it is always good for the trader to know how these pivot point numbers are calculated. This will give the trader an understanding of how these numbers are calculated and what are the variables that are used to calculate them. - 23210

3 myths about Flipping Apartment Complexes

By Michael Kimble

Most real estate investors think that flipping apartment complexes is our of their price range and ability. The entire workflow of wholesaling multi-family units has a resemblance to flipping single family homes, and given the bad assumptions of the endeavor, its easier to take advantage of this niche market of real estate investing. Current market conditions have created circumstances that the educated real estate investor can cash in on.

Here are 3 common myths about flipping apartment complexes debunked...

Myth 1... Bad credit means no deal! Not true! Banks actually care LESS about credit scores with apartment complexes. Banks know for a fact, private individuals rarely have the capital and cash needed to even get a downpayment on large multi-family complexes. What they truely look for is using the apartment complex itself as collateral... or also known as a non-recourse loan. The investor's credit score is NOT a factor.

Myth 2. The real estate investor needs huge amounts of dough to flip apartment complexes. Again, NOT true. Apartments fall in the commercial asset class, traditionally have always been bought with other people's money. They fall in the realm of using limited partnerships and syndicates to pool resources of a host of players and investors, to get these deals done. Given today's economy, investors and big players are looking for these apartment complex deals. It just makes good financial sense.

Myth 3... Apartment deals are just too difficult in comparison to flipping single-family homes. Untrue! Flipping apartment complexes is hassle-free by contrast. Most investors are intimidated by the larger numbers in these deals. That means less competition, and more buyers for your apartment deals. Property management companies are hungry for more business, to handle the day to day issues. Put those big numbers in these deals as fat zeroes on your assignment fee checks.

Flipping apartment complexes is incredibly profitable. Dealing with larger profit margins, an abundance of buyers, and using other people's money makes it the perfect opportunity for today's investing conditions. They just aren't the problematic real estate investment they are often made out to be. If you are a professional real estate investor, take a serious look at this oft-ignored avenue of investing. - 23210
