High-end Investments Vehicles

By Samatha East

In some ways, higher-end investments arent much different than traditional investments: You invest your money in stocks or bonds or mutual funds or ETFs and make all the same decisions that an average investor does. The difference is the amount of capital in play (typically a lot) or the risk exposure (typically high).

In other ways, high-end investments are almost a completely different beast. Its not so much of the buy and hold investing as it is trading or speculating assuming a business risk with the chance of profiting from the market fluctuations.

Successful speculating requires analyzing situations, predicting outcomes, and putting your money on one side of a trade based on those predictions. Speculating also involves an appreciation of the fact that you can be wrong 70 percent of the time and still be successful if you apply the correct techniques for analyzing trades, managing your money, and protecting your account. Basically, high-end investing means you have to chuck all your preconceptions about buy-and-hold investing and asset allocation, and essentially all the strategies that stock brokerages put out for public consumption. The following sections outline the high-end investment vehicles you can find out about in this book.

Futures and options

Futures and options, by their very nature, are complex financial instruments. Its not like investing in a mutual fund, where you mail your check and wait for quarterly statements and dividends. If you invest in futures and options contracts, you need to monitor your positions on a daily basis, often even on an hourly basis. You have to keep track of the expiration date, the premium paid, the strike price, margin requirements, and a number of other shifting variables.

That being said, understanding futures and options can be very beneficial because they are powerful tools. They provide you with leverage and risk management opportunities that your average financial instruments dont offer. You can dramatically increase your leverage and performance in the markets.

Commodities

Commodities are the raw materials humans use to create a livable world: the agricultural products, mineral ore, and energy that are the essential building blocks of the global economy. The commodities markets are broad and deep, presenting both challenges and opportunities. For example, how do you decide whether to trade crude oil or gold, sugar or palladium, natural gas or frozen concentrated orange juice, soybeans or aluminum? What about corn, feeder cattle, and silver should you trade these commodities as well? And if you do, what is the best way to invest in them? Should you go through the futures markets, through the equity markets, or buy the physical stuff (such as silver coins or gold bullion)? And do all commodities move in tandem, or do they perform independently of each other?

A lot of folks equate (incorrectly) commodities exclusively with the futures markets. There is no doubt that the two are inextricably linked: The futures markets offer a way for commercial users to hedge against commodity price risks and a means for investors and traders to profit from this price risk. But equity markets are also deeply involved in commodities, as are a number of investment vehicles, such as master limited partnerships (MLPs), exchange traded funds (ETFs), and commodity mutual funds.

Foreign currency trading

When you get involved in foreign currency trading (sometimes called forex trading), youre essentially speculating on the value of one currency versus another. You buy a currency just as youd buy an individual stock, or any other financial security, in the hope that it will make a profitable return. But the value of your security is particularly volatile because of the many factors that can affect a currencys value and the amazingly quick timeframe in which these values can change. Nevertheless, if youre an active trader looking for alternatives to trading stocks or futures, the forex market is hard to beat. Online trading innovations over the past decade have made it accessible, both technologically and financially.

Trading foreign currencies is a challenging and potentially profitable opportunity for well educated and experienced investors. If you decide to participate in the forex market, carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. Most important, never invest money you cant afford to lose (Investing can be a type of gambling). The leveraged nature of forex trading means that any market movement will have an equally proportional effect on your deposited funds; this can work for or against you.

Hedge funds

In a nutshell, hedge funds are lightly regulated private partnerships that pursue high returns through multiple strategies. A hedge fund manager may invest in almost any opportunity in the market where he or she foresees favorable risk to reward. Through hedge funds, you can get some high returns for your portfolio " if you dont mind the risk and have a lot of money to invest.

Because of the risk and the investment criteria, hedge funds arent open to most investors. To participate you have to meet strict limits put in place by the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding your worth (a net worth of at least $1 million and/or an annual income exceeding $200,000 in each of the two most recent years).

A hedge fund differs from so-called real money traditional investment accounts like mutual funds, pensions, and endowments because it has more freedom to pursue aggressive investment strategies, which can lead to huge gains or huge losses. - 23210

Investing In Real Estate Is Not Easy

By Ray Walberg

Today's real-estate market is leading many to dream of becoming real-estate tycoons: snapping up properties at low cost and selling them at a profit? Is that a dream you can make reality?

It is possible to make real estate investing a profitable venture, but it will not be easy. If you don't know what you are doing, you could lose your investment - or take years to earn it back.

Before you start checking the real estate listings, think about what you want. Are you planning to invest for the long term or do you want to buy quickly and sell quickly? Do you have the money and time to make necessary repairs and upgrades?

Another important question to consider is how much risk you can handle. Real estate is an especially risky investment because it takes so much time to realize a profit. To reach that profit you have to spend a lot of money: on the property, taxes, repairs, insurance etc. You also have to spend a lot of time: in repairs and in waiting for the market to cycle to a favorable condition for you.

These are not just theoretical questions. Research how much money you have to invest. Write down how much money you want to have in one year, in five years and in 20 years. Determine whether you want to use your primary home as collateral on your investment. (This will increase the size of the loan for which you will be eligible, but it also means you can lose your home if you cannot make your payments.) You may be more comfortable investing money on a smaller "fixer-upper" property.

Many people are tempted by offers to buy a parcel with no money down. These generally involve high interest rates and closing costs. It's a very risky venture because no matter what happens in the market, you will still have to pay the full amount eventually.

Before you take the plunge, learn everything you can about the real estate market. There are many books and periodicals available to teach you the basics. The internet is also a great source of real estate information. You can learn everything you need to know about contracts, mortgages, insurance, legalities etc. The best investment is one that you have spent some time researching.

Be sure you have access to good legal and financial information before you invest. If you don't know your legal rights and responsibilities you could make a serious mistake that could affect your financial health and future.

Real estate investing is not an easy venture, but with careful research and planning, it is possible to get a very healthy return. Because properties are unique, you can have a real adventure in watching changes in your investment. - 23210

Define Stock Market Ticker Tape

By Gilbert Stockton

The stock market ticker tape is, now, a computerized unit that relays information about a stock's trading activity to investors around the world. The stock market ticker tape's information includes the stocks' symbol on the exchanges, the latest price per share, and its trading volume. Before computerized methods, stock market ticker symbols were printed out on a thin piece of paper that continuously streamed out of a ticker-tape machine.

Technology has came a long way in that we no longer need to print stock information for ticker tape. All of it can be sent online. The stock ticker tape machine was created in 1867 and used to take a long time so send information out to brokers and the closest offices go the information quickest. Which explains why offices were built so close to the New York Stock Exchange.

Companies choose the symbols and letters for their company that they well denote on the ticker tape. This helps to avoid confusion and gives investors the knowledge for public trading on the market.

MSN and other tv shows run the ticker tape at the bottom for investors. It is difficult to read at first but as soon as you know what companies you wish to follow becomes a lot easier.

Stocks that are on the NYSE are denoted by three letters. Stocks traded on the Nasdaq are denoted by 4 letters. Mutual funds use letters and numbers to differentiate their symbols.

"Ticker" comes from the conceptual word of "tick", which is any activity of a stock whether it be up or down. A stock market ticker symbol readout will include, in order from left to right: the unique call letters of a specific security; the volume or number of shares traded (K = 1,000, M = 1,000,000 and B = 1,000,000,000); the last bid price for that stock, which is considered its price until there is a new bid; an up- or down- arrow that indicates if the stock's price is down or up from where it started the trading day; and the change amount, or the difference in price from the previous trading day's closing price. - 23210

Stock Trading 101

By Michael Swanson

I'm sure you have your own method to picking out what stocks you like to buy. You might be a value investor who buys based on fundamentals. Or you may be a growth investor who looks for companies that have big earnings growth. Whatever type of stock you buy you need a method to know when to buy and sell.

That is where technical analysis can come in. Technical analysis cannot tell you if a stock is cheap or expensive based on fundamentals, but it can tell you when you should buy and sell, which is just as important. Technical analysis is all about using price action to time your entry and exit points.

Three principles guide the beliefs of technical analysis. First is that market action (price movements and changes in trading volume) discounts everything. In other words all of the relevant information about a company's earnings and fundamentals are already known and incorporated into the price of its stock. Looking at a company's balance sheet will rarely give you an edge over other investors. Everyone else knows that information too.

The second principle is that asset prices move in trends. Predictable trends are essential to the success of technical analysis, because they enable traders to profit by buying assets when the price is rising, or as the popular saying goes, "the trend is your friend." Borrowing from Newton's Law of motion, technical analysis asserts that trends in motion tend to remain in motion unless acted upon by another force.

The third principle of technical analysis is that patterns happen over and over again. Traders and investors tend to move in herds and do the same thing over again, because people don't change. This enables the technician to profit from the behavior of the crowd in the market.

From these principles the technician attempts to identify trends in the market and reversals of trends. To distinguish trends from meaningless short-term fluctuations they use one of two types of analysis or a combination thereof: charting and mechanical trading systems. Chartists use graphs of stocks to identify meaningful patterns in the price and volume action of a stock.

The whole secret to investing is to get your emotions out of it as much as possible. Most people by because they fear missing out on more gains and sell when they let losses pile up and can't take them anymore. You just need to make rules to let your winning positions run and cut your losing positions quickly so they won't eat up your account balance.

It is all about learning and planning. You do those two things and you can make money in the stock market. Most investors don't and that is why most investors don't make a whole lot of money in the stock market or are just at average. You can do better if you just take action for yourself. - 23210
